By now, you may have seen that I am a life and career coach. I started my self-development journey and blog back in 2016 for fun. I was a little unhappy with where I was and what I was doing so I started to work on me – because it was the only thing I could control.
Over the last year I have built my coaching business. I have created a self-paced program about identifying wants, making a plan to get them and staying motivated along the way. I did this because I had just taken myself through that process.
I jumped all in because I was dissatisfied with my life. I was miserable, bored, annoyed and not serving myself or other people in a way that excited me. I honestly wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or how I wanted to get there but I knew I needed to make a change. So about a year ago, I began working on a plan to make a major change.
Prior to this jump to career coaching I was working in corporate HR. As a college grad, HR appealed to me because I wanted to help people, I had excellent people skills and I loved the idea of resolving issues while helping people find their career paths.
I loved the idea of HR.
Unfortunately, working in HR was a pain. HR is the type of job where you cannot be friends with your coworkers, it’s the type of job where you are ALWAYS the bad guy, you constantly defend team members to the company and the company to team members and in the end – neither have your back.
It is not a job for everyone and it definitely wasn’t for me. So I tried other aspects of it. I got into engagement, I got into celebrations and the HR technology space – but it still didn’t fit. I knew I needed to make a change and I needed to do it quickly – before I got bitter about my role.
My issue was that I had NO IDEA where to start. I wasn’t sure what to do next or how to get there. I also had to stay at my current role while I figured it out because I needed to have money to live and I needed health insurance.
So my soul searching had to be done on my off hours or on the weekends. With no leads on where to start I turned to books…books have always been my go to response.
I’ve always been a big fan of self help books. My personal favorites are “You Are A Badass” and “The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a Fuck” but they didn’t really apply here. So for this particular issue I bought some career coaching literature.
During this time my boss recommended I read “A More Beautiful Question” to help my big picture thinking. THIS BOOK CHANGED EVERYTHING.
“A More Beautiful Question” shifted my mindset. If you’ve never read it – it’s literally a book about the art of asking questions. It reminded me that ALL GOOD IDEAS were once just questions. It taught me that our options are unlimited if we know how to ask the right question.
In short, it taught me that I could be something different than what had been prescribed to me. My entire life I believed most people grew up and worked for corporations, the government, became teachers and like a handful became performers or famous. I believed that I had to follow the path I was already on to becoming an HR Goddess or CPO or whatever you want to call it. But, I had never truly entertained the idea that I didn’t have to be like everyone else. That there were more options. That I could take my own path and create my own journey.
So I asked myself the questions “what if I could find a career where I owned my schedule, helped people with my HR and people skills while also being 100% authentic and me?”
And I wasn’t sure. So I dug into the career coaching books – I devoured them – and then I kept looking for more.
By the grace of the universe, or whatever you believe, I got an invitation to join a container hosted by a business coach who aligned work with woo. Having never been devoutly spiritual I was almost surprised by how easy it was to jump into this container. I spent six months in this container and during it I got my answer – it was so obvious – I was meant to coach.
But, I hesitated. I honestly didn’t make the jump, I waited to start my journey. It was a couple weeks later when my my therapist brought up my job satisfaction and the idea of coaching that I decided to embark. For some reason, in that moment, it just clicked.
So I went in. I went all in on my journey.
I bought a coaching program and got certified within a month, I made a business plan and I banked on leaving my corporate job by December 2020.
But, the universe had a different plan.
On March 27th I was furloughed under the idea that I would be brought back by May. I decided to use this time to build my business, get a head start, maybe build a program or two. By the end of may it was clear they weren’t going to bring me back.
So I had to adapt my plan. I had to do the mindset work. I had to decide what mattered to me and what didn’t. I could either keep looking for HR jobs or commit fully.
I committed. And, it paid off.
When I designed What Do YOU Want it was just my plan to get out of my job that I didn’t like. It was my way to get free from something that didn’t fuel me.
What I ended up with was a kick ass plan to COMPLETELY revamp my life. And it’s how I continue to grow, make changes, identify what I want and adapt.
This is how I went from I have no idea what I’m doing to knowing what I want to do. It’s honestly how I got my sh*t together. It’s the real deal.
And it’s self paced so you can do it on your time. Because our growth doesn’t happen in a silo. We don’t usually get the privilege to focus on just ourselves – or grow in a linear way. Our journeys take us all over the place.
This program grows and adapts with you. It’s something you can spend time on for days, weeks, or months. The timeline is in your court. It’s how fast you can grow, learn and change.
You don’t need to know what you want before going into this – you just have to be willing to commit to the journey regardless of how long it is for you.
Ready to jump? Ready to start your journey
